Foliage shape is ovate and remains green at all times, be it normal or underside or juvenile or new or mature or spring time, or summer time, or fall or winter. This fern grows into a tree very much resembling the palm tree. Just like a palm it sheds its lower branches alongside the trunk during the process of its growth. Australian Tree fern has a very rapid rate of growth and grows to a height of about 20 feet and spreads 10-15 feet.
Stem is sheltered by a well-groomed pattern like an oval scar. The extended white and small red brown scales are found at the pedestal of the fronds. The leaves of grown-up plants are grouped in a firm rosette at top of stalk, rather than spreading out all along the stem.
It favors full or partial sun and organic, humid soil. It does not flower.
Australian Tree Ferns provide an excellent design idea for sheltered nooks and beneath the cover of bigger shade trees. Australian Tree Ferns add an absolutely flourishing exotic nature to just any space. Upon providing plenty of room at its overhead and upon combining them with other large-leafed foliage plants as well as with awfully sizzling colored unusual flowers, it provides an exotic look.
The Fern has some harmful effects as well. The spores spread by wind can journey over 12 km from the parent plant. Extremely swift growing and forcefully outcompetes resident plants.
Its companion plants are reigning queen. When combined with thriving foliage and colorful flowers, the tree fern appears lovely.
For proper maintenance, the Fern needs to be watered regularly during the initial growing season to ascertain a profound, widespread root system. Watering can be decreased post establishment. Feed the plant with a all-purpose fertilizer earlier than the new growth begin in spring.
The plant can be kept in the same pot for pretty long with the roots being made tidy. At the same time it is preferred to make it large as this plant is best suited for outdoors. It is likely to brood in a container if watering is not done promptly. In case the soil dries, the fronds brown quickly.
Propagation is possible and is mainly done by spores. The method is although little difficult, yet it can be given a try. Various resources are available on the Internet or it can also be found in books that are worth reading for learning the propagation of the Australian Tree fern. Unfortunately enough, the tree ferns usually send up offshoots.
