*Hosta Large Blues will actually become a deeper or more vibrant blue when grown in the North versus other parts of the country.

*Any blue leafed hosta can loose color with too much sunlight. They do work best in the shaded areas or with very little sunlight.

*Their deep blue color comes from the waxy surface of the leaves. So, too much sunlight or over watering will remove the waxy surface, thus removing some of the color.

*They need the same amount of water as other hosta plants. So keeping the soil moist around them is the most important.

*There are many different Hosta Large Blues, different species essentially. They come in different shades of blue; some will be much larger, while others are on the smaller side. There are some that do grow flowers and bloom in the spring. Here are some of the most common, along with their sizes and characteristics.

*Brave Amherst - these grow to be two feet tall and four feet wide. This is a very large hosta plant in width. They do need quit a bit of room to grow around them. Their leaves are wavy and year after year there will be a more distinctive gold or yellow border around the outside of the leaves. These also bloom flowers that can grow to a little over two feet tall.

*Blue Mammoth - another very large hosta plant. They will grow to three feet tall and five feet wide. Again, they will need a substantial amount of space around them to grow properly and reach their full potential. Their leaves are very hardy and have a rough texture to them. These also bloom flowers that will be a light purple in color.

*Abiqua Drinking Gourd - this is a smaller hosta of the large blues. This one is still big, just not as large as the previous two. It will grow to a little over a foot high and a foot wide. These have round leaves that are deep and heavy. There are white flowers that it will bloom.

*Camelot - this is actually a lighter blue in color compared to other large blue hostas. It has more of a powder blue color to it. It is a very large plant however. It will grow to only a little over one foot tall, but it will be right under four feet wide. The leaves are very heavy and thick, this plant also has round leaves and it will grow light purple flowers.

*Love Pat - a very deep blue in color with the rounded leaves. Their leaves will be very thick again and wavy. This plant actually grows white flowers and will reach a height of almost two feet tall and three feet wide.

*Reptillian - these leaves match their name. The leaves are actually a very dark, deep blue that will have almost a steel look to them. They definitely match their name with their pointed leaves, a tough scalloped edge, and a wavy appearance. They do grow slower than other hosta plants and when they reach their full growth potential they will be almost two feet tall and three feet wide. They do bloom light purple flowers as well.

*Big Mama - this plant produces a large clump of leaves that are very thick, with very dense waves in them. They grow to four feet tall and five feet wide. This is a very large hosta that will need a lot of room to grow, especially with the large white flowers that it blooms as well.

*Elegans - this hosta has round leaves and is one of the oldest known breeds around. The leaves are wavy and a deep blue. At its maturity is will grow to almost three feet tall and five feet wide. It will bloom white flowers that have a purple tint to them.

*Elvis Lives - the leaves of this plant come to a tapered point and are also wavy, a very different looking leaf compared to other hostas. Also, the leaves are a deep blue and have a suede or soft leathery look to them, getting the name Elvis Lives. The flowers that it blooms are lavender and grow to a medium size and height.

*Halcyon - this plant changes with age. Initially it will have very pointed leaves, but over time the leaves will round out with age. The leaves stay a very light blue and this hosta will bloom purple blue flowers that are very tall. It will grow to one and half feet tall and two feet wide.

Whether you choose one or a few of these or even all of them, Hosta Large Blues is a wonderful addition to any hosta garden. With their many shades of blue, their large size, and the blooming of flowers they work well in many situations.

xx
