Gardening With Hosta

Gardening with Hosta Plants.

Hosta plants are foliage plants, the technical term is herbaceous perennials, which means they have a non-wood stem and their above ground growth dies in the winter.  But, it will re-bloom in the spring.  Hosta plants come in three colors, green, blue, and yellow and are variegated, meaning that many times the leaves have splotches of color, such as green and white.  Hosta plants also have leaves that vary in size and shape.  You will find that there are elongated, round, even heart shaped leaves.  There are also different textures as well and some hosta plants bloom flowers that are just as variant in color and size.  With so many color, size, and bloom variations, hosta plants are used in a variety of gardening styles and places.

Hosta plants are usually a shade plant.  The colors in their leaves can fade quit a bit if they are in too much sunlight or exposed to the sun for long periods of time.  The only hosta plant that does not do this is the yellow plant, which actually is just the opposite and needs a lot of color to get to the maximum amount of the yellow shade.  However, there are times that allowing the blue and green leafed hosta plants receive a lot of sunlight is a benefit.  The hosta plants that bloom flowers need sunlight to make their aroma come out, so it is a trade off if you have a blue or green leafed hosta plant that blooms flowers, allowing them more sunlight then normal will give you the added benefit of seeing and smelling their rich flowery blooms and aroma.

When gardening with hosta plants using them around the base of trees, since they will receive shade is a common option.  They work great as foliage and are used more often for that purpose than for their flowers.  For this reason, they work wonderfully as a way to enhance the base of trees and other plants, as almost a ground cover.  This is a great option instead of using rocks or bark around a base.  Planting the hosta plants will also add additional color and textures to the area that you are creating, giving it depth and color variations.

Many times, planting hosta plants together in matching colors is a common technique.  However, placing green and yellow leafed plants together can create additional color combinations.  Or one can also place blues and greens, along with hosta plants that have variegated color.  You can actually create designs by placing the plants together in different combinations and using the different sized leaves as way to actually design a different look to your garden.  Since, most hosta plants need a lot of shade, planting them under trees and by bushes and other small plants is never a problem and will add color to an area that typically would not have as much.

Hosta plants offer a lot in the way of color and size changes. They are a wonderful way to create many different designs within one garden.  Experimenting with all the different hosta plant options will create a very unique garden that is never quite the same.
