Hostas come in many sizes. There are plants that are huge and need plenty of space to grow and thrive. There are also smaller hostas that work wonderfully under the larger hostas and by themselves as well. There are many color combinations that hostas come in Blue, green, yellow, and variate, meaning that they have two toned leaves. Some hosta plants bloom flowers, while others do not. Most grow best in the shade; however there are many that do well in both the sun and the shade. They need moderate watering conditions, as long as the soil is moist around them they will do well.
With this in mind, planting a hosta dish garden is a wonderful choice if you have never grown hosta plants before or if you have limited space. Hosta dish gardens work well indoors, since many plants need shade anyhow. Also, when there is limited space available, planting the smaller hostas in planters and dishes to be placed on patios and door entries still give you the joy of having a garden, but one that is much more manageable than trying to work with a larger garden and the larger hosta plants in a small area.
Choosing which hostas to use and can be based not only on size, but also color and if they bloom flowers or not. Arranging plants so that all the blues are together and then all the greens are together is a common practice, then planting variate hostas within these to add additional dimensions of color works very well. You can also make patterns by planting the hosta plants in coordinating colors and rows within the planter or in multiple planters. Using slightly larger hostas mixed with miniatures and dwarfs in the planters, will create beautiful color combinations and depths to your garden.
Picking interesting and different planters to match your plants is a great idea as well. Finding unique and different styles and designs to hold your hosta plants, will bring out the natural colors already in the leaves. Also, matching the planters to the flowers that will bloom on your flowers as well will help bring out the color as well. There are so many different types of planters to choose from, such as wood, plastic, and ceramic. Picking varying sizes and shapes and then picking hosta plants that match and will work well in the planters, you will achieve an interesting and unique hosta garden right on your patio or porch.
Regardless of how much space you have, since hosta plants come in so many sizes, you still many options available to you when designing your garden. Picking hosta plants for a hosta dish garden and choosing the smaller specimens that have unique and interesting colors will bring much life and interest to the area you choose to plant them in.
