Certain perennial plants like ferns and foliage, flourish well in shades. Hostas are such perennials that thrive under shading conditions and make your garden look strikingly beautiful.
Few things are extremely important for a shade garden. They are as follows:
1. Choosing the appropriate plants
2. Preparing the soil for plantation
3. Preferable conditions
4. Maintaining the Garden
Now we will look into each of these criteria in details in order to make shade gardening a success.
Selecting the proper plants for your shade garden - The colors of the foliage and their patterns should be taken into consideration while setting your shade garden. For instance, at the base of Aurea, the Black Mondo Grass looks extremely beautiful. To give your shade garden a brighter look, the hostas can contribute a great deal. Hostas are in fact considered as a favorite in shade gardening.
Soil for the gardening area and its Fertility - Prior to the plantation, the most important thing to do is prepare the soil. For this the first crucial thing to do is remove the weeds completely. Adding organic matter can be of great help since this greatly increases the drainage of the soil and also helps in improving the growth of the roots. This can be done easily by laying down a mulch layer and then simply garden on that. As the mulch layer starts decomposing, it gives the soil the necessary organic matter required to keep it healthy. One additional benefit of this is that it also helps in controlling weed growth.
Suitable Conditions - One very vital aspect that we should not overlook while setting up a shade garden is the provision for air. Usually people tend to neglect the same which can result in improper growth and appearance of the hostas. The overgrown branches of the bigger trees can cause hindrance in allowing the air to reach the shade garden and hence they should be removed in order to ensure that the shade garden is receiving ample air. Sunlight is also equally important but not direct sunlight. Morning sun and filtered sunlight can help these plants thrive well.
Maintaining your shade garden – Once you have set up your shade garden, now you need to take care of it so that the weeds do not grow, slugs do not attack the plants and ensure that the plants are in healthy condition. The first and foremost step here is to water your plants. Approximately one and a half inch of water level is considered good for the perennials. Lack of sufficient water will make them survive but reduce blooming. However, make sure you do not overflow the plants with water.
Protecting your shade garden from the attack of slugs is very important. The slugs can be eliminated by commercial pesticides. Dividing the plants is yet another means of controlling slugs.
